Osteoporosis: why me, and how can I improve it?

Osteoporosis affects over 200 million people worldwide. Understanding your personal risk factors is the first step to changing the trajectory.

The World Health Organisation classes osteoporosis as a global health epidemic. Roughly one in three women and one in five men over 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.

The main risk factors

  • Being post-menopausal or over 65
  • Low body mass index
  • Family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture
  • Long-term corticosteroid use
  • Smoking, high alcohol intake, or a sedentary lifestyle
  • Certain medical conditions (coeliac, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD)

Can bone loss be improved?

Bone density can be stabilised and, in many cases, improved through a combination of resistance and impact loading, nutrition, medication where appropriate, and consistent low-intensity mechanical stimulation.
