Deteriorating bones: signs and symptoms to look for at home

Bone loss is often silent until a fracture. Here are the everyday clues that suggest it's time for a DEXA scan.

Bone tissue rebuilds itself throughout life, but from our mid-thirties the balance slowly tips toward loss. For most people the process is silent — which is why paying attention to subtle changes matters.

Common early signs

  • A gradual loss of height (more than 2 cm)
  • A stooped or rounded upper back
  • Persistent lower back or neck pain
  • Weakening grip strength
  • Receding gums or brittle nails
  • Fractures from minor knocks or falls

When to seek a scan

If you notice any combination of these — especially alongside menopause, long-term steroid use, low BMI or a family history of osteoporosis — ask your GP about a DEXA scan. Early detection makes prevention meaningful.
